Introduction

Renewable energies are being widely implemented worldwide as a solution to the energy crisis and concerns raised by climate change. However, intermittency in renewable energy sources raises issues like voltage fluctuations. These fluctuations are harmful to sensitive electronic systems and can damage equipment. Therefore, sustainable energy storage is a key component in renewable power generation. Among many solutions like CAS (Compressed Air Storage), PHES (Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage) and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), Supercapacitors have recently gained a lot of interest from researchers because those voltage fluctuations can be mitigated by supercapacitors due to their rapid charge-discharge capability compared to batteries. However, supercapacitors cannot store energy for a long period because of their high self-discharge rate. By integrating supercapacitors with batteries in Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS), it can successfully reduce both short-term and long-term fluctuations. Hence supercapacitors show promise as an innovative sustainable energy storage solution.

Why Supercapacitors?

Supercapacitors offer enhanced capacitance due to factors such as larger electrode surface area, high conductivity and optimized separators. [1]

There are three principal types of Supercapacitors.

  • Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs)
  • Pseudo Capacitors
  • Hybrid Supercapacitors.

Here in this article, we do not go deep into each of these types. However, you can follow the video below to get more insight into them.

Batteries Vs Supercapacitors

When compared with batteries, supercapacitors offer positives like high power density and rapid charge and discharge cycles. However, it poses some negatives like low energy density and high self-discharge rate in comparison to batteries.

Pros and Cons of Supercapacitors

Pros

  • Very high cell voltages are possible
  • They cannot be overcharged
  • Long lifecycle over 5x1o6 cycles
  • Long operational life of about 10 to 20 years

Cons

  • Power available only for a short duration
  • Relatively low energy density
  • High self-discharge rate comparedto batteries

Applications in Renewable Energy

Solar power

Batteries demand long life span stability, fast charge-discharge cycles, and high-power density. Supercapacitors efficiently address these challenges providing better energy storage solutions for solar energy systems.[1]

Example: solar street lighting

Wind energy

Inconsistency in wind speeds cause voltage fluctuations in turbine output power. Therefore, supercapacitors are integrated in Hybrid Energy Storage Systems to mitigate short term fluctuations, while batteries can mitigate long term fluctuations.[1]

Electric Vehicles

Supercapacitors are used in energy regenerative shock absorbers and braking systems in electric vehicles to provide an extended drive range by offsetting the challenges related to batteries such as low power density and limitations in charge-discharge cycles.[1]

The Future of Supercapacitors

Recent developments in supercapacitors show promise as a sustainable energy storage solution for grid integration of renewable energy sources. This includes advancements in,

electrode materials:

  • Novel materials for enhanced energy density.

high quality electrolytes and separators:

  • Ensure high voltage charge-discharge by utilizing organic and ionic liquid electrolytes.

For example, in a recent research by a research team at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) have developed a hybrid supercapacitor using carbon derived from Pinus radiata waste. The importance of this is that electrodes are made of carbon derived from readily available biomass sources providing a sustainable and cost-effective energy storage solution.[2]

Conclusion

In conclusion, supercapacitors represent a groundbreaking advancement in energy storage systems, offering key benefits such as enhanced grid stability. However, their adoption is currently
constrained by challenges like limited energy density and significant self-discharge rates. To address these barriers, ongoing research is exploring innovative engineered materials aimed at improving performance. Additionally, achieving cost-effectiveness and sustainability remains critical for scaling up their usage.

Notably, the emergence of hybrid supercapacitors, which merge the features of batteries and capacitors, has unlocked new possibilities for fostering reliability and stability in renewable energy systems. Once these existing limitations are resolved, supercapacitors have the potential to revolutionize wind and solar energy storage, making them a transformative force in this domain.
